How to Store Spices So They Stay Fresh Longer

Spices don’t exactly “expire,” but they do fade. Heat, light, air and moisture are the four enemies of flavour. Here’s how to store both whole spices and ground powders so they stay vivid for months.

1. Airtight is everything

Oxygen dulls aroma. Glass bottles with tight lids and resealable pouches (squeezed of excess air) are your best friends. Our 50g powders come in glass bottles and 500g/1kg packs in resealable pouches for exactly this reason.

2. Keep them cool and dark

A cupboard away from the stove beats a pretty rack above it — heat and sunlight bleach colour and flatten flavour. Whole spices are hardier than powders, but both prefer the dark.

3. Buy whole, grind fresh (when you can)

Whole spices keep their volatile oils locked inside for a year or more; once ground, the clock runs faster — use powders within 4–6 months of opening for peak flavour. A simple sniff test tells you everything: if the aroma is faint, it’s time for a fresh pack.

Fresh stock, sealed tight.
